“Get this fellow cleaned up and put him in a cell,” Blevins said to Sergeant Dalton.

“Parson Brown,” Dalton said. “He is one rank individual. Whew! If we’re bringing them in for stinking, we’re going to need a whole lot bigger facility.”

“I’ll be in to deal with him first thing in the morning. Get him something to eat, too.”

Dalton buzzed open the door and took Purvis to the back.

“Give me his keys,” Blevins said to Moreno. “Come on and I’ll drop you off at home.”

They climbed into Blevins’s truck. “Still smells horrible in here,” Moreno said. “You going back out to play some more, Sir?”

“Naw. Think I’ll turn in early.”

“OK, Reverend.”

“What’s that?”

“Sergeant Dalton called you Parson Brown. Is that your secret alias?”

“He wasn’t calling me that,” Blevins said. “Just an old expression for people who don’t use ‘Jesus Christ.’ Like some people say ‘John Brown.’ Parson Brown is actually a breed of orange developed by a man in Florida named Parson Brown. He was—”

“Major, I know all that. I was just messing with you.”

“Oh. Sorry. I was just going off on another lecture, or in this case, a sermon, eh?”

Moreno nodded. “You’re learning.”
